The first step is to prime the furniture. This step is the most important because its going to be the difference between having paint peel off and having a beautifully painted piece of furniture. Make sure to use an oil based primer. Oil based primers adhere much better than water based primers. I use Zinsser Cover Stain Oil-Based Primer & Sealer. I apply the primer using a foam roller and a paint brush designed for oil based paints in order to minimize brush strokes. My favorite brush is the Woodster White China Bristle Flat Brush, but for this project I just used a Woodster Pro brush for oil and latex paints
Once the primer dried I painted the bookcase with Behr Frost 1875. When it's on the walls of my bedroom its pretty much white and so I figured it would look the same on the bookcase which is what I wanted. It may seem stupid to paint a white bookcase white again, but these things were so beat up they needed a fresh coat of paint!
Using a level and measuring tape I started by taping diagonal lines down the back of the bookcase 6" apart.
Once that was complete I taped angled lines using a measuring tape spaced 5".
I drew little lines after measuring and placed the top and bottom of the tape under the lines I had drawn. It's important to be consistent where you stick the tape (top or bottom of the lines you drew) otherwise it'll end up uneven.
Once you've got all the tape down make sure to run your finger or, better yet, a credit card along the tape to make sure the edges are completely adhered to the piece.
I applied two coats for each color. Then I removed the tape. I recommend pulling the tape off right after you're done applying the second coat to prevent the new paint from peeling.
After doing a few touch ups I went back and spray painted the piece with Minwax Protective Clear Finish to help with the durability. We decided to use this in the kitchen since we don't have a pantry and have limited storage space. We figured it would be nice open shelving for the dishes and whatnot.
Here is what the piece looked like when it was all done!
I also picked up some new dished from Target. Our old ones had seen their day.
